Regional Rally August 2015

This year our Regional Rally was on 15th August 2015 and was hosted by Susan & David Shepherd. I imagine a number of people’s faces lit up as they read we were going to Kirkistown race track because I know mine certainly did.

From 8:30am, we gathered at The Willow Tree in Comber for a delightful fry to fill us up until lunch time. At 11:30am we headed off in three different groups for a scenic route along the coast towards Kirkistown Race Track. Everyone pushed there cars to the limit, we had Convertibles, Vans, Pick-up’s, Saloons, Travellers, Series 2’s and even a Lowlight! Along with many other classics.

Everyone had great fun going around Kirkistown with a couple of ‘friendly’ races’. You could see it in their faces that they really enjoyed it no matter what age! We weren’t allowed to race around the track properly as I think they were afraid a Morris Minor would break the lap record!

Once we were finished at Kirkistown we headed towards Portaferry for our lunch stop. We were able to take a boat trip across Strangford Lough if we wished and the Lifeboat was also available for viewing. The great weather made the lunch stop a lot better as everyone could sit in the sun to enjoy their picnic.

Just before 3.00pm we set off on the road again, this time towards Donaghadee for our evening meal. This was a lovely drive and the cars certainly got a lot of attention as we entered the sea side town. We parked up along the Donaghadee Pier and walked to Pier 36 for dinner. The food was great and I’m sure the club will return in upcoming years.

This year’s Regional seen a massive turnout of cars. We had a total of 61 cars and 124 people. We were delighted to have Ruairi Browne & Phil Buckley with us who travelled all the way from Kildare in the South. We even had two new members join on the night.

At our Regional Rally it is tradition to give out our annual awards. This year our Endeavour Shield was awarded to Joan McGregor, who works throughout the year for the club. Our Cup was awarded to Christopher Drummond, who has for years represented the club here and across the water.

A great day was had by all. Thank you Susan and David.
